The Hampden-Wilbraham region was originally called Minnechaug, meaning "berry land" or "berry hill", by the Nipmuc people. In 1674, the land was sold to William Pynchon of Springfield and later became known as Springfield Mountain. The area began to be settled around 1741, with the first European settlers being the Stebbins and Hitchcock families. Early development centered around the Scantic River, where grist and sawmills were built, and many homes were constructed along its banks.
For over a century, Hampden was an agricultural community as part of South Wilbraham. In 1878, Hampden separated and became its own town. By this time, industry had begun to grow, but several major mill fires, including the Lacowsic Mill in 1892 and the Ravine Mill in 1904, weakened the local economy. The rise of automobiles also led many to work elsewhere, contributing to a decline in industry.
Hampden then returned to agriculture, with orchards, dairy farms, and crop farming thriving. The town also became a popular vacation destination for Springfield residents, and many summer homes eventually turned into year-round residences. Over time, Hampden evolved from an agricultural hub to a residential community.

Fairview Grove is rich in history and legacy. Founder Rev. Bennett, who served as the pastor of the Colton Hollow Baptist Church was instrumental in the religious and community life of the Hampden-Wilbraham region. The Bennett family would go on to care for the property for well over 150 years before it passed to the Wentworth family, and then to Dr. Philip B. Stoddard, a distinguished plastic surgeon renowned for his pioneering work in cleft palate 3D surgery at Shriners Hospitals for children in Springfield, MA.
We are honored as the fourth family to steward this historic estate, working diligently to preserve its beauty & honor its rich past. Prior owners have left a lasting legacy on our community, and we strive to continue that tradition.
